History
For over four decades, Pujari has been passionately nurturing the cultural soul of the Atlanta Bengali community. Founded by a group of energetic and dedicated volunteers from the greater Atlanta area, Pujari began as a heartfelt effort to celebrate India’s vibrant culture and rich heritage—offering a sense of belonging and nostalgia far from home.
Established in 1986 as a nonprofit, nonpolitical, socio-cultural organization, Pujari of Atlanta was created to foster friendship and mutual understanding among people of Bengali and Indian origin, as well as the wider American community. The organization was formally incorporated as a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity in 2001. From its earliest days, Pujari has enjoyed unwavering support and loyalty from Bengali families across metropolitan Atlanta and neighboring states including Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Arkansas. Through its diverse initiatives, Pujari continues to promote cultural, community, and socio-religious activities that celebrate Bengali heritage while embracing multicultural harmony.
Pujari experienced a remarkable phase of growth with the enthusiastic involvement of younger volunteers, ushering in renewed energy and fresh ideas. With strong youth participation and overwhelming community support, Pujari has successfully introduced and sustained much-loved annual events such as the Annual Picnic, Tennis Tournament, and New Year’s Eve Celebrations, which have become highlights of the community calendar.
Following incorporation, Pujari significantly expanded its commitment to charitable causes. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 tragedy, Pujari co-hosted a fundraising event with SEBA (South Eastern Bengali Association) to support the American Red Cross. The organization also raised and donated thousands of dollars for 2004 Tsunami relief in partnership with the Robin Raina Foundation. Beyond these efforts, Pujari and its members continue to support numerous charitable initiatives focused on literacy, early childhood education, and upliftment of underprivileged communities.
In 2003, Pujari revitalized its bilingual publication, renaming it Anjali, which has since become one of the most respected publications within the Atlanta Bengali community. The annual Sharodiya Anjali features contributions from renowned writers and thinkers from India and across the globe, further enriching the cultural fabric of the community.
As membership continued to grow, so did the need for improved facilities. Responding to this demand, Pujari transitioned to a larger venue at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County, offering ample parking, a fully equipped auditorium, and a cafeteria to better serve its events. Over the years, Pujari has hosted celebrated Bengali artists from the Indian subcontinent, including Saikat Mitra, Nachiketa, Tanushree Shankar, Band Kaya, and many others—solidifying its reputation as a pioneer and cornerstone of Bengali cultural life in the United States.
